Los Angeles, California has already kicked off the annual ABC’s of a Safe Summer event, providing first aid and CPR courses throughout the greater Los Angeles area over the summer months of June, July and August. ABC-7 (KABC-TV Los Angeles) in conjunction with local businesses and the American Red Cross sponsor this annual community event held at various locations around Los Angeles, as well as providing safety “at-a-glance” brochures to download.
Visit the ABC-7 website at abc7.com and scroll down to the bottom right corner to the link “ABC’s of a Safe Summer” and download all five at-a-glance safety brochures/charts, available in your choice of English, Spanish, Korean or Mandarin. The brochures cover the essentials of summer lifesaving topics (and year-round safety) first aid, CPR, aquatic/water, fire and heat safety and precautions. If you haven’t already made a home emergency notebook, start here and download your free copies for instant reference.
Next sign up for one of the American Red Cross classes and demonstrations listed for upcoming months in Lynwood call (888)525-9693 and in Los Angeles call (800)961-1724 for rotating dates and times. Upon course completion (only 3 ½ to 5 hours long) you will receive your first-aid and CPR certifications, mandatory for all teachers, social workers, foster parents, child-care and health care workers in California.
These combined classes are held on various days and times at locations throughout the greater Los Angeles area over the next few months. Many of these classes are free, although some locations charge $5.00 per person and a couple of locations charge a $25.00 fee, which is still half the usual price for Red Cross certification.
A few years ago I took my elderly parents and my son, then just five years old, to our closest ABC’s of a Safe Summer event. My young son practiced rescue breathing by my side on our dummy as did other young children attending and they received free balloons and learned to save lives, while the adults got quizzed and American Red Cross certified! The Los Angeles location at Griffith Stadium, phone number listed above, will allow you to register your children ages 5 to 15.
The Safe Summer campaign is sponsored by ABC-7, the American Red Cross online at redcrossla.org/, Aetna, L.A. Care Health Plan, Metro PCS, Southern California Municipal Athletic Federation and Safe Kids L.A. in conjunction with the City of Santa Monica, L.A. City and County Fire Departments, Departments of Parks and Recreation and the Department of Water and Power. Links to all sponsors are listed at the website mentioned above just below the printable safety brochures.
This family-friendly community-wide summer safety event is one of the best programs Los Angeles offers. So make sure to reserve a spot for your family at one of the several locations offering free-to-low-cost life saving first-aid and CPR certification with additional summer heat, fire and aquatic safety steps. Have your kids participate and learn these essential summer safety recommendations, it could save a life!
