When I let go of what I am, I become what I might be.
Life often seems as though it is nothing more than an obstacle course. Everyday we are confronted with countless problems and worries. In studying many of the eastern religions and philosophies, a continual patterns emerges of how we can address these problems.
Lao Tzu was a great Taoist philosopher and teacher. The quote above is representative of many of his most famous quotes. It is simple, and yet its meanings are profound. A key principle of Taoism that can help us in our daily struggles is the idea of achieving harmony with the forces at work in the world.
Life is about making choices. You already know that though. Yet, in making these choices it is easy to lose sight of the things that are most important to our personal development. This is where Lao Tzu’s guidence becomes of great use to us in our daily troubles. While we can never fully know what each day will have in store for us, we can have the faith in ourselves to be willing to let go of the things that make of most comfortable when the time calls for it. Whether this is going out on a limb during a meeting or deciding whether or not a relationship deserves to be salvaged, it is important to be aware that we all have the potential to be than what we are. However, you can only achieve this if you are capable of letting going of the expectations of yourself and having the faith to work towards the greater calling that is ringing in your ears.
This is a letting go philosophy. You do not have the control over your life you may think you have. This can be a source of constant worry and conflict. Yet, if you are willing to let go of your expectations and pursue the path that will allow you the greatest personal development then you will be able to achieve the greatness that is in inherent inside all of us. This greatness though is highly personalized. In other words, we can not all realistically be the President or the CEO of Coca-Cola. However, we can each achieve the greatness that will bring us the most peace and happiness during this life.
Remember, all the worrying in the world will not change a thing. All you can do is find the strength to let go. By letting go you can allow the current of the universe to carry you along and help you find the place where you need to be. Once you have accepted that you are not as powerful in your own life as you think the burden of the world will become much lighter.
