After I watched the first Twilight movie last summer, I wrote an article entitled “A Senior Citizen Reviews Twilight the Movie” here on Associated Content. This past weekend, Netflix kindly sent me the next Twilight movie installment in the series called “New Moon”. I was curious to see if this sequel would find me as mesmerized as the first one. Again, I got so caught up in the story of Edward and Bella and Jacob’s love triangle, that I felt compelled to write about this movie as well.
Just like all lovers onscreen, we want to see them together and happy. Edward and Bella were very happy at the end of the first movie, but sequels tend to put the characters in jeopardy. And “New Moon” did just that. Edward, using poor judgment I might add, decided that it was best for Bella if he and his family and their penchant for being vampires would leave the area in order to protect her. Once he made that stupid decision in his demented head, he and Bella had a little rendezvous in the woods and Edward wanted to “talk”. Bella, like all savvy women everywhere, knew something was up. He told her he was leaving her, forever, and Bella looked literally stricken with panic when she realized he meant it. She tried to talk him out of it, but Edward went one step further and told her that he didn’t want her with him and that she wasn’t good for him. Of course, we all knew he didn’t mean it, but Bella was just devastated. He crushed her heart, and ours, when he said those things to her.
So Edward disappeared. Bella spent many months walking around in a depressed daze, crying herself to sleep and having nightmares where she’d wake up screaming that scared her Dad half to death. Then one day in walks Jacob. Oh my. Jacob must have been spending some time lifting weights since the first movie because he has some great looking muscles now. Oh and he has long shiny black hair too. He looks like a sexy Indian guy. Very hot. He also adores Bella. I mean she’s cute and all, but I’m not sure if I understand why all the hot guys would lay down their lives for her. Anyway, Jacob manages to lift Bella’s depression and catch her attention for a little while. That is until Bella discovers two very important things.
First, she realizes that when she feels fear and her adrenaline gets going, Edward seems to “appear” to her. Since that is her only contact with him, Bella searches for that feeling every chance she gets. Which, of course, puts her in quite a bit of danger. Edward is always “appearing” and telling her to stop or don’t or please stop or please don’t, but Bella has a hard time because she wants Edward to stay, even though he’s only there in a ghostlike way. I know this sounds crazy. I mean I thought Jacob was so cute, I wanted to ask Bella what the hell she was doing. Jacob is right here, in the flesh, and wanting her so badly, and Edward, with his pale face, although sexy, is just an apparition.
And what was that second important thing Bella realizes? Well Jacob started to change, and not for the better. He seemed to become angry and sullen and Bella was at a loss to understand why. Well one day she found out. Jacob’s secret was that he turned out to be a werewolf. Yep, that’s right. And to make matters worse, he cut off all his beautiful long shiny black hair. What a letdown.
Since there may be someone left on the planet who hasn’t seen this movie yet, I would never give away any of the rest of this incredible story. However, as in all good love stories, there is always some huge miscommunication between the two lovers, and this movie was no exception. There are so many questions to be answered. What does Bella think about Jacob now that he’s a werewolf with short hair? How come Bella only goes for guys who are not totally human? What if she met a normal guy who wasn’t a vampire or a werewolf? Would she like him? Would he like her? And most importantly, does Edward eventually realize what an idiot he was when he left Bella in the beginning of the movie and do something about it, or does he stay away and just appear to her when she’s about to jump off a cliff? Dakota Fanning, is that YOU?! Where did you get those red eyes?
I thoroughly enjoyed this Twilight sequel called “New Moon”. Even though much of the story is kind of over the top, and quite suspenseful throughout, somehow Edward and Bella once again pulls us into their passion. I can’t quite put my finger on it. When they look at each other, there’s a love there that you hardly ever see between two people. And when we witness that, we want desperately to have them end up together. You’ll have to watch “New Moon” to find out if Edward will once again become Bella’s seductive vampire lover, or are they doomed to be apart?
