Kansas City may not be the city of love but it offers some stunning choices if your intentions are the wildly romantic. The staff, ambiance, and scenery of these next three establishments help them to shine out from the rest as the most romantic restaurants in Kansas City. From a first date you’d really like to impress to nervously uttered proposals to seasoned veterans on their 25th or so anniversary these restaurants have held them all to their bosom. They have provided the baseline of memories that will last a lifetime. So, the three greatest romantic restaurants in Kansas City:
Shields Manor Bistro (www.shieldsmanorbistro.com) 112 Main Street Platte City, MO 816-858-5557
Behind a magnificent pine tree rises a modest 19th century recently restored two story white wood house. It has a charming tin roof, sleek black shutters, and a beautiful brick patio covered in tasteful furniture. There are no other signs here that a restaurant even exists but that hasn’t stopped patrons from finding one of the masters of romance. Shields is only open three nights out of the week and that adds to the exclusive club feel of the place. Here, you and your partner are treated like world class citizens.
The owners, DeDe and Max Shields, each have their own responsibilities in their restaurant. DeDe is your accomplished chef who gathers herbs from a culinary garden on site and encourages her guests to take home samples. Max serves as the pasty chef (with blue ribbon winners such as the Platte County black bottom pie) but also as the host, wine steward, and maitre d’. The menu is small: one appetizer, four to five entrees, and only three to four desserts. The appetizer is always the same- Chef Shields own bleu cheese shrimp, an award winner in Kansas City, along with her entrée of steak in cognac sauce. It was voted the best steak au poivre in all of Kansas City. It’s simply to die for as is the service. Many of the servers have been there since 2001, when Shields opened, and they are eager to cater to your every whim with white gloved elegance and skill. A fresh rose adorns every table. It practically oozes romance.
Shields Manor Bistro is well known for its homey, high quality romantic atmosphere. It’s further claim to fame is that it may have seen more proposals than any other restaurant in Kansas City. It’s a great destination for any occasion you wish to be spoiled. You will need to make a reservation. Still, the quality of the food, the great service, and the great homey atmosphere make this a great place for your golden opportunity and even more golden memories.
Romance “with a twist”
Skies (www.skieskc.com) Hyatt Regency, Crown Center Kansas City, MO 816-398-4845
Considered one of the classiest restaurants in all of KC, Skies also has a unique “twist” on your classic romantic atmosphere. They are the only restaurant to actually revolve as you dine. This gives diners an extraordinary view of the beautiful Kansas City skyline as they sip expensive wines and enjoy the elegance of absolute class. It takes about 90 minutes to make one complete turn (about the time you need for dinner and dessert) and all of 90 seconds for Skies to not only take your breath away but to leave you with memories that will last a lifetime.
You have to take a special elevator to gain access to Skies, located on the 43rd floor, and it is closely guarded by its very own concierge. After being granted access you can literally be blown away as you step in and see all of Kansas City in its glory. The restaurant itself is shaped almost like a doughnut. The kitchen, host station, waitstaff station, etc. is located in the middle (where the hole would be.) The outer ring rotates around it and contains two rows of tables, an outer, lower level in front of the windows, and an upper, inner level. This allows all to bask in the romantic view from the panoramic windows. It’s so beautiful you could weep.
Reservations are requested (and very strongly recommended). Skies is an award winning restaurant- Kansas City’s Best View and no surprise, Most Romantic. It has a quiet, refined atmosphere and the staff is excellent. The menu is a lot larger than Shields but it is also a little more expensive. A Filet Mignon served with bleu cheese, onion jam, red wine sauce, and roasted portabella mushrooms and a side of mashed potatoes will cost you $39. You can enhance any meal by adding a 25 dollar lobster tail or an 18 dollar grilled shrimp skewer. Still, everyone knows the price of a great romantic evening can not be measured in currency. Trust me, Skies is highly recommended and its earned everyone. You can prepare to be pampered there and they too promise memories for all time.
Savoy Grill (www.savoygrill.net) 219 West 9th Street Kansas City, MO 816-842-3890
Here we have the Savoy Grill, nestled in the Hotel Savoy, and having been in operation since 1903, the oldest restaurant in Kansas City. It didn’t always have the most romantic past however. When it first opened, it only catered to men in the exclusive Savoy Men’s Grill. This quickly changed however and now its reputation for high class romance flourishes and goes without question here in Kansas City. Its also a historical delight. At Booth no. 4, known as the presidents booth, has sat the great(s) Warren Harding, Harry S. Truman, Gerald Ford, and Ronald Regan. On Dec. 30, 1974, the Hotel Savoy (and the Savoy Grill) were entered in the National Register of Historic Places.
If it’s a classic elegance you crave for your romantic escapade you will find it here. Breathtaking stain glass domes, high beamed ceilings, and beautiful artifacts adorn this upscale, classiest of classy romantic hideaways. It is the most expensive of all three of the restaurants. (Savoy T-bone Steak- $43.75, Lamb Chops- $35.75, and Chicken Breast- $21.75) They offer a whole variety of decadent seafood (including a jumbo lobster for two coming in at an amazing $69.75) and plenty of wonderful, pricey soups and salads. The staff is exceptional as they move skillfully in their uniformed glory. Everyone is treated like a VIP and you can know that your every whim and expectations will be met. It has a quiet, awe-inspiring atmosphere that leaves you feeling like you may have walked back into time. It’s perfect for any romantic occasion. It’s also one of the most recommended restaurants in all of Kansas City. If its within your price guide, you must make a reservation, and of course, it is black tie.
In conclusion, romance is abound in the beautiful city of Kansas City. Regardless of your romantic intentions, Kansas City offers choices which are as diverse and will leave you feeling fulfilled as she does herself. Kansas City is just the place for making all kinds of memories. Whether you live here or your visiting, Kansas City can not only meet your romantic needs, she will leave you with an impression that will last a lifetime.
