By faith we know that God created the world from “that which is not seen” Heb 11:3. It follows then by faith God is the witness to when the beginning was as well as knowing when the end will be. We can know by faith about how much time there has been since the beginning if we follow the written record.
For those who believe the Bible, the writings of Moses, the prophets and the writings of the apostles of Jesus, all the history of the earth is recorded in the Bible, there is nothing prehistoric. Genesis 2:3 “this is the history of the heavens and the earth when they were created” Jesus taught, “in the beginning He made them male and female,” so “the beginning” is a period of time. Later God wrote in stone, “for in six days God made the heavens and the earth the sea and all that is in them, and He rested on the seventh day.” Ex 20:11. We understand then “the beginning” was a seven-day period of time or one week.
Nature is and has been operating according to the laws given by the Creator since the beginning this includes the laws that govern time. The earth rotates on its axis as it revolves around the sun and the moon rotates around the earth. When you are old enough you are told how much time has passed since you were born, or since your parents were born or any other historical event like the birth of Jesus. Telling how much time has passed becomes a combination of what you can see for yourself and what you accept as truth from others. The history of time then is a matter of what or whom you believe.
For the faith filled believer we have the record of the Holy Bible as our history of time. The Creator has been able to preserve a record of important information and events. Humans also have been able to keep records of past events and count the passage of time in seconds, minutes, hours, days, months, years, centuries and best approximations. Many checks and balances are used to maintain fidelity of the records. We know from the commonly accepted record keeping practices used today, in our western world, that it has been about 1979 years since Jesus lived on earth.
The Bible places Jesus birth during the reign of Herod, and during the census. It is most commonly accepted that Jesus birth was about 6 BC or 6 BCE depending on the dating system; which means it is has been about 2016 years since Jesus was born in Bethlehem.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jesus
We have in the Bible the genealogy of Jesus back to Abraham, listed in the gospels of Matthew 1 and Luke 3. We know how many people but its how much time passed is the question? The Bible records time starting at the creation the first seven days then Adam was 130 years old when Seth was born and Seth was 105 years old and so on as follows.
Adam 130, Seth 105, Enosh 90, Cainan 70, Mahalaleel 65, Jared 162, Enoch 65, Methuselah 187, Lamech 182, Noah 500, Shem 100, Genesis 5
So Adam to Noah’s grandson or from creation to 2 years after the flood is 1656 years and 5 days.
From the first man born 2 years after the flood to Abraham is 290 years.
Apachshad, 35, Shelah 30, Eber 34, Peleg 30, Reu 32, Serug 30, Nahor 29, Terah was 70 when he had Abraham or from Noah’s grandson to Abraham was 290 years, Genesis 10.
Abraham was 100 years old when Isaac was born (Genesis 21). Isaac was 60 years old when Jacob was born. Jacob went to Egypt and the whole tribe spent 430 years there. One year was spent getting to Canaan and then 40 years wandering in the wilderness. Then there were the judges, the kings, and the captivity. So the Bible is filled with dates that can be added together which allow us to count, from the Biblical point of view, about how much time has passed since the beginning if you want to add them up.
For the purpose of counting time we can also use Matthews gospel chapter 1. Matthew records the geneology of Jesus all the way back to Abraham and in verse 19 he records, so all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations, from David until the captivity in Babylon are fourteen generations, and from the captivity until the Christ are fourteen generations,” Matthew 1: 17. So from Abraham to Jesus was 42 generations.
One can figure out the length of a generation to determine how much time was there in these 42 generations? I have not found where the Bible it says clearly how long is a generation? A generation could be 100 years, 70 years, 50 years or some other number.
Israel was in Egypt 430 years, God says Israel will dwell in foreign land and I will bring them out in the fourth generation. So it is possible at one time a generation was about 100 years. In fact because the average life span has changed it possible the length of a generation has changed too. David said a man’s life is 70 years. I reasoned because every 50 years God told Israel to have a jubilee that a generation is 50 years long, since God restarts land ownership anew.
A Bible based account of time would then be
Creation to flood 1656 years
Flood to Abraham 290 years
Abraham to Jesus is 42 generations @ 50 years each = 2100 years,
And Jesus to the present is about 2015yrs.
So all the time that we have in the written record, from the beginning of creation until now, is about 6016 years, give or take a few years. That is a Biblical based ballpark figure. With more reading I can figure the passed time more closely, but why?
The Bible speaks about history and time and the future, there has been only so much time and you have only so much time, whose version history are you going to believe? Jesus taught about love, faith and truth. What are you doing with your time?
