It has been announced that the comic strip “Little Orphan Annie” will no longer be making its way into the funny pages of comic strips.
Comic readers call it the end of an era after 86 years of daily publication of “Little Orphan Annie” the circulation numbers dwindled down to less than 20 newspapers, which in turned ended the famed comic strip.
Instead of concluding the story of Little Orphan Annie, they cut the story off in the middle, with Daddy Warbucks knowing that Annie was kidnapped by gangsters. The comic strip dated as far back as the 1920s, with Daddy Warbucks and his little orphan Annie and their endless stories of misadventures, kidnappings, and murderous plots.
Take a look at the actresses who played the title role of Annie, on Broadway and in film productions of Annie.
In 1977 the Broadway adaptation of the famous comic strip was played by Andrea McArdle. Andrea was supposed to play one of the orphans, but producers felt that Kristin Vigard was not tough enough to play Annie, and then replaced her with Andrea McArdle. McArdle went on to become the youngest performer to be nominated for a Tony Award in the best lead actress category. Since then, she has spent her career by performing in cabarets and musical theater in roles for “Annie Get Your Gun”, “Beauty and the Beast” and “Les Miserables”.
Took over the title role from 1978-1979.
Sarah Jessica Parker
In 1979 she took over for Shelley Bruce, and went on to play the star “Annie”. Sarah Jessica Parker was then cast in the CBS sitcom “Square Pegs“.
She’s known as the longest-running and youngest Annie star. She played Annie for almost three years, and performed the role more than 1,000 times. Later she went on to star in “Kate & Allie” and “The West Wing“.
In 1996, Joanna Pacitti, at 12-years-old was selected as the lead role in Annie for the 20th anniversary revival of the show. She starred in 106 performances, before being dropped before the Broadway debut. When she was dropped the case generated national publicity and they ended up settling the matter out of court, for an undisclosed amount. She went on to audition for American Idol, making it to the Hollywood round. But, due to the fact that she had already had a record deal with Geffen records, and a tour with Sheryl Crow, she was then ineligible to continue, due to her connections to the producers on American Idol.
This was my favorite actress to have ever played Annie. Quinn starred as Annie in the 1982 film “Annie“. After words she had roles in national music tours, before she became a teacher, at the Hudson Catholic Regional High School in Jersey City, New Jersey. Aileen Quinn is who I will always picture in my mind as Annie.
The young star first played Cosette in Broadway’s “Les Miserables’ in 1996. She then was chosen for the made-for-television version of Annie, in 1999.
