Paint thinner is a product used to thin oil-based paint. It can also be used as a solvent to clean paint from brushes and off any non-porous surfaces. There are many types of paint thinners on the market at various levels of toxicity. Paint thinner should be used and disposed properly. The following tips may be used as a guideline.
Tip 1 – Wear safety equipment such as goggles, rubber gloves and shoes when working with paint thinners.
Tip 2 – Always use paint thinner in a well-ventilated area. The fumes are toxic and can cause headaches and nausea. Other health problems can develop from extended use of paint thinner without the proper ventilation. Always make sure the windows and doors are open to allow for air circulation. Use a fan or exhaust fan when available.
Tip 3 – All paint thinner should be kept away acid or acidic materials. Paint thinner and acidic products can react violently. Never mix the paint thinner with any other substance except paint. The chemical reaction could be dangerous.
Tip 4 – Paint thinner is highly flammable. Store separately from any combustible material, open flame, or heaters. Do not smoke when using paint thinner. Any open flame that comes in contact with the paint thinner can cause a fire or explosion.
Tip 5 – Always wash your hands and any area of skin that has come in contact with paint thinner. Use warm water and plenty of soap. The toxins in the paint thinner can be absorbed into the body. It can also cause skin irritation or skin inflammation.
Tip 6 – Always keep the lid on the paint thinner container tightly closed when storing. This will prevent spilling and possible fume evaporation from the container. Store in a secure location so someone who is not fully aware of the safety precautions will not use it by accident.
Tip 7 – Dispose of the paint thinner in an appropriate manner. It is considered hazardous waste. It should never be dumped down the drain, on the ground, or placed into the regular trash. Follow the guidelines within your city for proper disposal.
Tip 8 – Never consume paint thinner. Contact medical authorities in the case of consumption. If the paint thinner becomes in contact with the eyes, flush thoroughly and seek medical attention. Medical authorities should also be contacted in case of breathing or other skin problems.
