When I sat down to think about which motorcycles I would select as the top five coming in 2011 what came to mind was that there is an amazing array of choices that cycle enthusiasts have now compared to even just ten or fifteen years ago. Back in the eighties nineties the cycle innovators were simply the production engineers were boosting horsepower and going toward fuel injection and electronic engine controls. Now some of the most interesting innovations on the cycle horizon include exciting things like all electric motorcycles and 3 wheeled scooters, plus at least one cycle utilizing hybrid drive technology!
One significant thing to note is that the line between smaller motorcycles and larger scooters is becoming more blurry by the month. with exceptional cycle equipment coming from all over the world there is a lot of competition in this lighter cycle classification. there has been a serious revolution going on in the scooter marketplace and the designs are becoming more bold for example some scooters look like overgrown bicycles with an attitude and others are just plain space age looking rides straight out of a “Jetsons” cartoon!
I have been watching the electric vehicle movement flow across the different vehicle lines and am very interested in the electric cycle format. This could be one of the most significant energy reduction people moving alternatives to hit the streets ever. This fact becomes even more important when you consider how many people across the world use scooters and motorcycles for basic transportation.
So unfortunately, researching the upcoming motorcycles of this type for 2011 sales is not as simple as I had first expected it to be. One thing I noticed is that the really innovative cycle companies are being very secretive about what they are working on this far in advance. I believe they are doing this so that other companies cannot take any specific top secret design elements from their machines and copy them for next year. There is not much going on at the showrooms which i visited representing any 2011 models since most are still trying to sell off 2009 and obviously 2010 models.
Another fact is due to the poor economy there are a lot of companies who are scaling back in every aspect of their operations so they will probably not be doing any major updates for 2011 only cosmetic ones. What this means to the consumer is that we may have to wait another year or two for anything truly radical to come out of the design studios of the major motorcycle and scooter factories.
So with that in mind here is my list of five cycles for 2011 that will be sure to excite the masses. For me the one thing that has stirred up the most attention in the two or three wheeled market is the recent improvements which have been made in the three wheeled cycle designs. It is like I have always said there is at least one trike rider in every crowd and there are three production trikes which have really struck a chord with the buying public one being the Piaggio Mp3 Hybrid, and second one is the BRP Spyder, third is the Myers Motors 3 wheeled cycle that looks like a small car.
My first choice of cycle for the absolutely most creative design of any cycle in a very long time goes to the Piaggio Mp3 Hybrid. This 125cc four stroke gas engined three wheeled scooter is stated to get 141 mpg and it is touted to be the first production built Plug in Hybrid scooter in the world. They have other versions of this unique three wheeled design one of which is the basic gasoline engine version of their 125cc three wheeled scooter. They have another model the Mp3 LT with a 400cc four stroke engine which is still classified a scooter and you can drive it with your regular car license and do not need a special cycle operators license. these things corner like there is nothing but straight road ahead due to their clever quadrilateral suspension. the front two wheels lean at an angle up to 40 degrees and the entire scooter leans over a bit taking your body over with it. so you do not have to intentionally lean into a turn the cycle does it for you! there are dealers in the United States which are selling these, and we have a Suzuki dealer near us that has some of these and all you need to do is call ahead for a test drive. I just watched a show on tv recently where two old guys drove them cross country.
The second fairly revolutionary production motorcycle is the Bombardier CAN-AM Spyder. this is a reverse trike motorcycle and it is an awesome looking creation. the basic design will stay the same for 2011 but some improvements are on the way for minor handling issues. other than that minor cosmetic items will be included that will hopefully be an improvement. This awesome looking ride has a 998cc DOHC 4 stroke engine that puts out 106 hp, coupled with a 5 speed transmission this thing really gets out and moves. It seats two and weighs in at about 700 pounds and can take a payload of 440 pounds. This is a fast and stable Trike that will turn heads no matter where you are riding!
Third choice would be the Myers DuO plug in all electric motorcycle. For a while now I have been wanting to get behind the wheel of a Myers Motors three wheeled two seat all electric motorcycles which looks like a futuristic car. The aerodynamic body is all fiberglass and you plug this cycle into your house power which can either be 110vac or 220vac depending how you order it. The only thing we can guess for their 2011 models would be perhaps a gas electric hybrid model that enthusiasts have asked for. This is a local company which is very close to my hometown and they are located in Tallmadge Ohio.
Fourth model which I would love to own is the MadAss 125cc street legal motorcycle which is made by Sachs from Germany. These are being built in China and are shipping all over the world right now. The frame is your gas tank and the design elements keep the bike to a nimble 200 or so pounds. costing around $2500 and getting 110 mpg this is a really great deal if you are looking for reliable yet cheap transportation! Plus it is a super cool looking little bike! At about 8.5 hp and top speed just under 60 mph this probably would be a great starter machine for any novice rider who wants to learn to ride on something that has plenty of zip yet is nimble and manageable. This bike has met all of those expectations and more. The 2011 MadAss promises to be as exciting as the current models but a larger displacement engine with a bigger ass pipe (their name for the exhaust pipe) could be coming our way!
Fifth and certainly not the least on this radical list is the KTM Freeride which is an all electric motorcycle that comes in either a dirt bike style for off road, and a more civilized street machine version. The dirt bike enthusiasts who are riding these bikes think that since they are so much quieter than regular dirt bikes that they can get dirt tracks built much closer to the city and perhaps even inside smaller venues for racing demonstrations, like perhaps even inside a large shopping mall? The electric motorcycle trend is growing faster than any single cycle trend worldwide and the electrics from KTM promise to be at the top of the two wheeled heap into and beyond 2011.
