Are you exercising? Are you eating the right foods? Have you lowered your daily calorie intake? Have you taken many positive steps toward your goal to losing weight and yet the pounds still remain? Could you have a hidden health issue that could be keeping you from losing weight?
The following are 5 health issues that people, especially women, may have and may not know. These health conditions can cause weight gain and keep one from losing weight, even if they are exercising and are cutting back on calorie intake.
Sluggish or under active thyroid
If your thyroid isn’t working properly your metabolism can become off and you can tire easily. This is known as hyperthyroidism.
Symptoms of an under active thyroid includes: weight gain, cold sensitivity, hair loss, dry skin, joint pain, just not feeling like yourself, brittle nails and hair, depression.
Your thyroid can easily be checked through a simple blood test. If it is found to be under active, it can be treated easily with daily medication.
Changes in the body as well as pregnancy can play a part in hormone imbalances.
Symptoms can include: irregular periods, excess facial or body hair, acne, and unexplained weight gain.
A woman who believes hormones are playing a role in the fact that she is not able to lose weight can easily have these levels tested through simple blood work.
Medication can be given to even out these levels, if necessary.
You may not be aware of the fact that some foods are actually causing you to be filled with more gas and fluids than necessary. Some foods may actually contain ingredients that your body can not process such as lactose which is found in diary foods and gluten which is found in a variety of foods.
The best way to see if these types of foods are causing you harm is to keep a true food diary. Write down everything thing you and eat and drink. Then note how you feel after each meal and snack.
Show this diary to your doctor and then work with him/her to begin an elimination diet. Begin cutting back certain foods out of your diet one by one until you begin to feel and look better.
Some medications you are taking can actually cause you to gain weight. These can be actually medications given to you by your doctor.
The three main medications that are known to cause weight gain are:
• Oral contraceptive
These types of medications can cause weight gain over a period of time. They do not always begin when a patient first begins the medicine. They weight gain can develop slowly after the patient has taken it for a year or more.
If you think your medication may be at cause for your weight gain, discuss your options with your physician.
Unexplained reasons for weight gain
If you suddenly begin to gain weight for apparently no reason, talk to your physician. He/she may want to make sure that the weight gain isn’t a serious issue such as: retention of fluid to heart, kidney or liver disease.
Symptoms include shortness of breath leg or swelling of either foot.
Testing can be done easily through: urine analysis, blood work or X-rays.
As you can see there can be a variety of reasons as why you might not be losing weight. If you are doing what you think you should be doing to fight the battle of the bulge and still have no luck, don’t just fret about you problem, talk to your doctor to make sure you don’t have a hidden health problem that may be stopping your from reaching your diet goal.
