Buying a digital camera can be somewhat of a jigsaw puzzle. Sometimes, you can find one option you like on several different cameras. This can lead to spending a lot of money on a camera you learn to not like very much. While SLR cameras are great, they tend to skew toward the expensive end of the spectrum. When it comes to digital photography, the purpose of the camera usually dictates which one you need to buy. Since personal preference and brand loyalty also come into play, deciding which camera to purchase can be a tough decision. However, if you are looking for a solid digital camera for under $200, here are some options to consider.
Sony Cyber-Shot 14.1 Megapixel Digital Camera
The Sony Cyber-Shot 14.1 Megapixel Digital Camera, which is model number W350, retails for $199.99 at Best Buy or bestbuy.com. This is a great camera loaded with features like: auto flash, face detection, image stabilization, and burst shooting mode. The 2.7″ LCD screen is big enough to review photos or mini movies. The camera feels great in your hands and all the controls including the zoom are easy to reach and control. The 14.1 mega pixel resolution means that photo will look great even if you blow it up into a poster sized print.
Canon PowerShot SD 1200-IS
While not as deck out as it’s big brother, the SD 1300, the Canon PowerShot SD 1200IS retails for $149 at Wal-Mart or walmart.com. This particular camera features a crisp 2.5″ LCD for viewing and taking photos, and features the same DIGIC 4 image processor that makes photos on the more expensive cameras look great. The camera is comfortable to use and at 10 mega pixels has great resolution, and is usually bundled with a memory card at Wal-Mart. Really, at this price range this is an extremely solid camera.
Nikon CoolPix 12 Megapixel Touch Screen Digital Camera
At Target or target.com, you can find the Nikon CoolPix 12 Megapixel Touch Screen Digital Camera for $199.99, though it is on sale quite a bit. The 3″ LCD display takes up the bulk of the back of this camera. However, because it is a touch screen, that is necessary for editing, cropping, and even drawing (via stylus), so the screen needs to be bigger. The resolution is great at 12 megpixels. While there are many settings for the camera, it still retains it’s point and shoot ability. Of course, you can not go wrong with a Nikon CoolPix.
Canon PowerShot SD 1300-IS
At Best Buy or bestbuy.com is the Canon PowerShot SD 1300-IS for a $199.99 retail price. The Canon PowerShot SD 1300-IS represents a nice step up from the SD1200-IS. The most noticeable step is the 2.7″ LCD screen and 12.1 Megapixel resolution. It can capture bright and vivid colors in stills, and actually makes movies look pretty good as well. Just like the other Canon PowerShots, it feels really good in your hands, and offers a range of options for the moderate to advanced photographer to play around with as well. The burst shooting mode is always appreciated on any digital camera, and this one works great.
Kodak Easyshare M341
At Wal-Mart of walmart.com, you can find the Kodak Easy Share M341 priced at $99. While lacking in options and zoom power, this is a great entry level camera that has great video capability as well. The 12.2 Megapixel resolution is impressive for a camera priced under one hundred dollars, and allows for images and movies to stay intact when increasing or decreasing their size. It comes equipped with the Kodak Easy Share technology which allows for sending a picture at the touch of button, and the auto flash and auto focus work pretty well. This feels a little clunky in your hand and takes some practice to point and shoot, but really is a great camera at an admirable price.
