Flying has become increasingly expensive in recent years. Baggage charges account for some of the hikes in prices as well as onboard entertainment that is no longer offered free of charge on most flights. How can you overcome baggage charges?
Shop Around for the Best Deal
No-frills airlines used to offer value for money to passengers. However, a lot of the special deals no longer amount to much when you combine the hikes in airline costs, checked baggage fees and so forth. Do not be quick to settle for a no-frills flight because it looks cheap. Do a price comparison with other airlines (including baggage fees), add up the sums and then pick which one offers the better deal. You might be surprised to discover that the no-frills airline is not so affordable after all.
Wear Heavy Clothing During Your Flight
Heavy clothes quickly weigh down a suitcase, making it more likely that you will be charged excess baggage fees at the airport. Wear heavy items of clothing, such as a heavy duty coat, heavy boots and other items that take up room and add extra kilos to your suitcase. Remember, too, that if you wear a coat with several pockets, you can add extra items inside the pockets such as books, iPod, camera and travel money, without having to pay for excess baggage fees. Just be prepared to empty out your pockets when you go through security.
Can You Combine Your Weight Allowance?
Some airlines will allow you to combine your weight allowance if travelling with your family; others will not. The key is to find out ahead of time if you are allowed to combine your weight allowance. Do your children also get a weight allowance? If so, combining your weight allowance can save a fortune in excess baggage fees at the airport.
Leave Large Bottles of Toiletries at Home
Toiletries can easily set you over your weight restriction, which is why it is a good idea to leave large bottles of toiletries at home. Invest in travel sizes instead, or decant your own shampoo and conditioner into travel size bottles. Travel with the basics to avoid the tendency to over pack.
Before you leave home, be sure to do your research. Shop around for the best deal, rather than settling for a no-frills flight. Wear heavy clothing during your flight and find out whether you can combine your weight allowance with your accompanying family members. Leaving large bottles of toiletries at home is another way to avoid going over your weight restriction.
