Facebook is an increasingly important tool for independent bands, and its Band Pages feature is one of the most successful ways to promote shows, CD releases, and fan interaction on the Internet. Of course, a band can only take advantage of Facebook if it has a good number of Facebook fans.
Here’s a look at a few easy ways that any band can get more fans on Facebook.
1. First of all, invite them. No brainer, right? A lot of bands actually skip this step. Facebook allows individual users to invite their friends to become fans on their Band pages by clicking the “Like” button, and you should make sure that everyone in your band invites all of their friends. Realistically, your friends and family members are probably your best, most dedicated fans, anyways. Remember: when you’re promoting your band, you can’t afford to be shy–you should practically demand that they add your page to their regular Facebook haunts.
2. Use your current fans. You can also use your band’s current list of fans as a sort of self-replicating organism. Send an “update” to fans asking them to tell their friends about you. Make it appealing to them–let them know that you need their support to keep the band going, and maybe offer a free CD or something to fans that can add more than 10 members. Regularly tap your fans for promotion. On Facebook, this is relatively easy, both for you and for the fans that are doing the work.
3. Use your live shows. Mention your band’s Facebook page frequently in your live show. You’ll be surprised at how many audience members look you up after the show; I took to mentioning my page for my acoustic act, and received about 100 new fans in two months. Hit open mic nights, talk to people, and do everything else that you’ve done to promote–just throw in a few mentions of your Facebook page, and you’ll be doubling your efforts.
4. Keep your page updated. You’ll get more fans if you have a compelling Facebook page for your band. Update the page frequently, but don’t just use it to promote yourselves. Use it to connect with fans (and potential fans). Update your status with information about the band, what the band’s doing, thoughts, anything. Try to make people feel like the band has a personality of its own. You’ll get more comments and “Likes” on your status updates, pictures, etc., which will translate into more overall interest for your band’s Facebook page.
