3 Ways to Introduce Alice in Wonderland to Younger Children

by itchyfish

Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland may be a hit with teens and adults, but the film is really too frightening for younger viewers. However, preschoolers, elementary age children and tweens can still share in discovering the imaginative adventures of Alice with these family-friendly options. From audio drama to printable game boards, there are several ways for families to open the door to Lewis Carroll’s enchanting world.

Free Audio Performances

In addition to the audio reading, Story Nory features an illustation for each chapter of Alice’s adventures, plus the written text. The performance features an authentic British accent for all of the characters. Go here to listen.

The Wired for Books version has an American voice for the narrator and the character of Alice. There are also original illustrations to accompany each chapter. You can listen to the first chapter and find the other chapters here.

Video Performances for Children

Walt Disney’s Alice in Wonderland is a true children’s classic, and a special 2-disc edition was released on DVD this year. Parents can confidently enjoy this animated version with their children, remembering their childhood introduction to the world of Alice.

Another version of Alice in Wonderland aired on TV in 1985. It features costumed actors instead of animated cartoon characters. The DVD was released in 2006, and according to reviews on Amazon.com, it is a much-beloved classic as well.

Crafts and Activities

You can find crafts and recipes featuring Alice in Wonderland at the Disney Family website. From shrink charms to cupcake toppers, Cheshire cat cupcakes, printable stickers and more, there are plenty of offerings for kids to enjoy making.

For free coloring pages, you can visit the Disney Magic Artist site and find coloring sheets to print or you can click and color online. While there are other unauthorized sites offering the Disney pages, since they are not legitimate the image quality may be lower.
