When I commit to being a fan of a TV series I am hooked for life. I buy every piece of merchandise I can get my hands on. I find myself daydreaming about the characters and speaking about them as if they really exist. Don’t judge me, I have a feeling you know just what I mean.
We all watch certain programs for different reasons. Perhaps you watch because you love to hate the show. Maybe you like to be whisked away to galaxies unknown or maybe you just want to see someone on the tube that is just like you.The thought of seeing your favorite small screen hero being brought to life on the big scream is electrifying. Here are three of my all time favorite remakes that I felt hit a home run when it came to interpreting the series.
The Brady Bunch Movie
I will never forget sitting home and watching Brady Bunch reruns on TV when I was a kid, I loved it. I didn’t realize then just how corny these story lines were. In the 1995 movie version starring Shelley Long,Gary Cole and Christine Taylor they certainly brought the essence of the Brady clan to life. The scenario of the film was perfectly chosen. Mike and Carol find themselves in a situation where they discover their neighbor is planning to turn the neighborhood into a mini mall. The Brady’s refuse to sell their home but when they find out Mike owes back taxes in the amount of $20,000 they need to come up with a scheme to save the house. The kids find out and decide to enter a talent show to win the money. What makes this movie hilarious is the fact that the brood is living in the 90’s but their minds and wardrobe are stuck back in the 70’s. Plot points include classic episodes from the series. This includes, the football that is thrown at Marsha’s perfect nose, Cindy’s tattling and Jan still living in the shadow of Marcia, Marcia Marcia expect with a more intense loathing for her flawless sister. It is uncanny how most of the cast look like they were cloned from the original members. Shelley Long and Christine Taylor do spot on renditions of Carol and Marcia. This is definitely a parody. However it does an excellent job of celebrating the idea of the Brady Bunch and making you feel nostalgic.
Star Trek Nemesis
I am a die hard Next Generation fan. Each week every episode swept me away and triggered my imagination. The series was a hit. The reason why I adored Nemesis so much is because it felt like I was watching a two hour special episode. I like the fact that it did not feel like a movie. It starts out with Riker and Trois wedding with all my favorite cast of players attending. Including Data, Worf,Geordi, Dr. Crusher and of course Jean Luc Picard. As they make their way to the newlywed’s honeymoon the Enterprise finds itself in the Romulan neutral zone. They are sent further to Romulus and encounter, a strange character named Shinzon from the slave planet Remus. He appears at first to want peace with the Federation. Not long after the crew discovers a break in in their computer system and Captain Piccard is captured by Shinzon. We come to learn that Shinzon was cloned from Jean-Luc’s DNA and is slowly dying. He needs the captain for his genetic cells so he can be cured and essentially journey to the earth to destroy it. The CGI and explosions were exciting but to me still not on a movie scale quality. Again which I loved it stayed true to the familiar.
Sex and the City
Miranda,Carrie,Charlotte and Samantha are my go to girls. I never missed an episode from the moment it aired to the final one. Sex and the City is my second religion. The stories that unfolded from each woman’s life week after week were so relatable to me and my friends I felt as if I was watching a video of my life. When that series ended I was overwrought with grief. I often wore my “I’m a Carrie” T-shirt and wondered if there would ever be a reunion show. When I found out there was a movie being made I screamed so loud that my neighbor thought I was being robbed. Opening day came and my palms were sweaty. I felt as if I was going to visit a dear friend I hadn’t seen in years. As soon as the title song and headings came on my cheeks were flushed. They starting showing little vignettes of the girls and where their lives had gone in the past two years. It was pure heaven. As the plot lines for each character unfolded I felt as if this was the same magical TV show I had watched for all those years. They stayed so true to each character. Miranda shutting Steve out, Samantha getting antsy with her monogamous relationship. Carrie continuing to write books and be a fashion icon, Charlotte fulfilling her dream as mother and Big still having commitment issues. It truly didn’t miss a beat. I felt like I was sitting on my couch with a cosmopolitan again hanging with my favorite ladies.
