Anyone from Columbus Ohio will tell you there is no better place in town to visit but right downtown on High street. As a resident for some time and a constant visitor I have found some great places to go on High street. A few of these places would be the Newport Music Hall, LaBamba’s, and the Hookah bar.
One of the best places to go on high street is one of the best concert venues in the city. The Newport music hall plays host to a variety of bands that would play to a smaller audience. The building is rather small and thus creates a very intimate experience with the performers. It holds roughly 500-1000 concert goers and it feels like the band is playing in your own living room. It is an open floor without seating, so plan on getting involved with the music. If you don’t want to be up close and personal there is an elevated floor from the lower floor where you can get away and still enjoy the show from a close distance. The bar is rather pricey as is with any concert, but the prices are competitive and relatively cheaper than those at larger venues like the Germain Amphitheater. I have seen a few bands at the Newport and a few more at the Germain Amphitheater and I have to say I would rather see a concert at the Newport any day. Granted some bands require the space of a large venue and its truly a shame that they wouldn’t give a concert at the Newport because of the intimacy with the few fans lucky enough to have the exclusive tickets. All in all it doesn’t matter what show you’re going to see at the Newport, you’re guaranteed to have a great experience.
Right down the street next to the McDonald’s on campus is a little almost unknown authentic Mexican restaurant called LaBamba’s. LaBamba’s offers “burritos the size of your head” and make no failure on delivering their slogan. Not only are the burritos big enough to keep the appetite of Paul Bunyan satisfied, but they are authentic to the Mexican cuisine style. They are made right in front of you much like at Chipotle, with the exception for taste. No matter what you’re doing in Columbus, it is a must stop for lunch. The flavor of the burritos here are unmatched by Chipotle because of the quality of ingredients used to make them. There is a real pride that goes into making each burrito. If your appetite isn’t quite as big as a worn out lumberjack, there are smaller burritos and tacos available as well which are just as delicious, but to get the full effect of LaBamba’s, I would recommend the Super Burrito. There is no other Mexican restaurant I could see myself going to if I were in the area.
A little north of campus is a very great place to visit if you are a connoisseur of tobacco products or just looking for an upbeat relaxing atmosphere where the people are friendly. The Hookah bar offers patrons a choice of select tobacco disks to smoke alone or with friends in a Hookah. Inspired by Arabian culture, the Hookah bar is a great place to relax after a long day of work (or a long day of writing articles for associated content) with friends and enjoy your tobacco filtered through water. There is many different seating styles from chairs to the most comfortable couches in the city. The Hookah bar also offers a menu of exotic foods from around the world including some delicious baklava that I would highly recommend getting. I would recommend visiting the Hookah bar if you are in town and enjoy smoking tobacco. Even if you don’t enjoy smoking tobacco, the smoke is removed from the room very well and their menu of food is like visiting the country of origin without the passport.
Whether you are moving to campus to start your studies at The Ohio State University or seeing the Blue Jackets play a game in the arena distict, the Newport Music Hall, LaBamba’s, and the Hookah bar are must visits when on High street in Columbus. The city’s culture is very well defined by this main street that runs right through the center of the city and to feel part of the city must be experienced by going and being involved in the city.
