Winners of this award are based on most album sales, making it a very accomplished award for any artist lucky enough to be nominated.
Jennifer Lopez sang a medley of her hits, with a whole lot of hip thrusting going on. Really. I think she would be a much better singer, if she would focus more on singing the song, less on singing the background of the song, and less attention on dancing – more on singing. Although since she is a great dancer, maybe that is her logic. To sum it up: I am not saying she can’t sing, just that she should worry about the singing portion more than being Britney Spears. Right? Still love J.Lo and her perfume, Glo is my absolute favorite! And who doesn’t love Jennifer Lopez!?
Deborah Cox performed, Leave the World Behind. I had never heard of her before now, her music has nice rhythmic beats, but needing more words and lyrics, if you ask me. One sentence a song does not make. But her music still gave off a good feeling with what lyrics that were there. The nice dance beat makes you wanna move, regardless. That chick has the most toned arms I have ever seen!
N.E.R.D sang Beautiful/Hot’N’Fun. The rap acts name is an acronym for no one ever really dies. Their music made me realize that I was being too hard on Jennifer Lopez, as they make her look good! Really good! At least her music has real lyrics in them and she is putting herself into a more real side.
Kelly Rowland (of Destiny’s Child fame) and David Guetta performed When Love Takes Over. She certainly showed her vocal chops tonight. It’s nice to see her back with a musical hit for sure.
David Guetta and Will.i.Am performed I’m Going Crazy. Guetta said when he was nobody, Will-i.Am helped him and he thanked him, before their performance. It was nice to see the crowd get up on their butts and enjoy the musical festivities. That is what they are there for, right? It seems Will.i.Am is the new international phenomenon, he has been constantly tearing down boundaries in the music industry.
Akon and David Guetta then combined on stage for Sexy Chick. Half-naked chicks and Akon’s voice and beats are sure to lure in even the unwilling, to watch for a bit.
I was excited when hosts Michelle Rodriguez and Hayden Panettiere announced that Ludacris would be performing How Low. I love Ludacris, not to mention he has sold over 24 million albums, and has earned his place in music. Apparently I’m not the only one who likes his music ;)
Elissa sang Tsadaq Bmein, as the best middle-eastern artist. Her music was consuming and effectual, and I was really impressed by the way, although in another language, you could feel meaning in her voice and words.
Andrea Bocelli sang UnAmore Cosi Grande, who Hayden Panettiere
Best New Artist
Lady Gagawon the best new artist title. She is the new cultural phenomenon, and I was not surprised to see her win another award. She couldn’t be there to accept her award, so she was taped via video cam as she again thanked her little monsters. The nominees for best new artist were Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Susan Boyle, Kesha.
Best Hip-Hop/Rap Artist
The Black Eyed Peas won their second award of the night! Nominees in this category were Eminem, Black Eyed Peas, Jay-Z, Ludacris. Although only one Pea was actually present.
Best Italian Artist
Tizizano Ferro for ‘Breathe Gentle’, he went straight into performance when his name was called singing a lovely song. I had never heard of him, even with his accent his song was easily understand and had a nice flow to it. So far, he has had the best performance of the night. ‘Breathe Gentle’ had real life lyrics and the audience felt the connection to his performance. He told the audience to “keep it real”, and I second that!
David Guetta won for best producer and he called it an honor to be in the same category with Akon, Will.i.Am, and Pharrell.
Best African Artist
Akon brought won this award, and said he always comes to the World Music Awards because he always wins an award.
Best Asian Artist
Namie Amuro won this award, as announced by Paris Hilton, and then performed her hit Hide and Seek. The song has a nice dance beat to it. This is why I love the World Music Awards – you can easily find new acts that you have never heard of.
Best Pop/Rock Artist
Won by Lady Gaga. Big names in this category of nominations were Lady Gaga, Madonna, Rihanna, and Taylor Swift. Gaga said she wishes she could be there, but she is currently on the Monster Ball tour.
Jennifer Lopez won the award, and is the only person to have a number one hit, and number one hit – at the same time. She thanked her long-time manager Benny Medina, her husband Marc Anthony she called a legend and the love of her life. She thanked the fans for supporting her for so many years, and called it only the beginning.
This award went to David Guetta. This dude is racking them up! Nominees were David Guetta, DJ Tiesto, Armin Van Buuren, and DeadMau5.
Best French Artist
Won by David Guetta. Wow, he wins them all!
Best R&B Artist
The Black Eyed Peas won yet another award, wow! The nominees were Alicia Keys “No One”, Akon, Black Eyed Peas, and Beyonce.
Lady Gaga won for Poker Face. Nominees in this category were David Guetta featuring Akon, David Guetta (again, really!) featuring Kelly Rowland, Beyonce, Kings of Leon, Black Eyed Peas, and Lady Gaga. Hey, David Guetta can’t win them all, at least I hope. He isn’t the only person in the music biz. Maybe he is in that country, not really, but still no one wins them all.
Best Classical Artist
Won by Andrea Bocello. I was really hoping that Katherine Jenkins, who sang a song by Evanescence would win, she was amazing. Paul Potts, The Priests, Andrea Bocetti, and Katherine Jenkins were up for nominations.
Lady Gaga has now won 4 albums, so far tonight! She beat out talents like Michael Jackson, Susan Boyle, Black Eyed Peas, and Taylor Swift.
Best Rock Act
U2 won, of course! Nominees are U2, Green Day, Kings of Leon, and Muse.
The Scorpions won the rock legend award and I was beyond thrilled! I have loved their music for years! They have started their world tour and I am excited!
The Scorpions ended the show with a performance and it was a perfect ending. Don’t forget to support them by catching their tour, at a location near you. And they are one of the few bands I have loved since I was teenager, but still have never seen live.
Which performances were your favorites? Did you think one of your favorite bands got the shaft? The Scorpions singing Rock You Like A Hurricane and Winds of Change was my favorite performance, by a long shot!
Bye for now, I’m off to listen to The Scorpions! Why? Because they rock!
