Many readers have asked for a list of Senators who voted against putting the 2010 Unemployment Extension bill to a vote before heading off for July 4 recess. The 2010 Unemployment Extension passed the House of Representatives Thursday, but Senate Democrats failed to reach the necessary 3/5 majority to overturn a mostly Republican-led filibuster.
This means that as U.S. Senators head off to enjoy the long Independence Day weekend (which apparently translates into ten days if you’re a Senator…), more than one million Americans will lose their unemployment benefits before the matter is even addressed again. Below, you can find a full list of who voted for and who voted against the 2010 Unemployment Extension bill floor vote, ensuring the proposal would remain stalled until at least July 12.
Many Senate Democrats attempted to settle the 2010 Unemployment Extension bill, which seeks to extend filing deadlines for unemployment benefits until November 30, before heading to recess. In fact, many Republican Senators did the same. The ‘Yea’ votes had a majority, but it just wasn’t enough. With a full 60% majority needed for a cloture motion victory, the 38 ‘Nay’ votes were enough to kill the matter until the Senate reconvenes. Here, a list of votes on Wednesday’s cloture motion on the unemployment benefits extension bill.
