Renaissance faire lovers planning a trip to Northern California this fall will have to look no further than Arcata, California for something to do. Take a trip back in time and visit the Excalibur Medieval Tournament and Market Faire on September 25-26, 2010.
Originally started as an opportunity to teach the area youth about courage and honor, it eventually segued into a way to raise needed funds for various Humboldt County school curriculums. Today, this event has grown into a family friendly, educational, yet fun experience. History comes alive during this two day affair. Go back in time to see what it was like to live during the era. Watch and learn how to be a blacksmith, weaver, or leather maker. Discover that today’s cooking is much easier than it was back then. This engaging experience even comes complete with a live jousting tournament and period costumes.
Additional entertainment for the weekend will include interactive performances from “Myth and Magic”, “Tip, the Fire Breathing Giant”, and the “St. Valerius Troupe of Actors and Other Such Nonsense” – a group of stage and street performers. Participate in the North Coast LARP, or live action role playing, where one can act out various scenarios as a character from the day. Watch out for those pesky goblins and trolls!
Enjoy food from the day (and today) at the local inn and all through the grounds. Other treats and beverages, including wine and Humboldt County beers and ales will also be available. Be sure to stop by Rising Day Crepes and Coffee for great coffee and of course, crepes!
For those thinking about purchasing early Christmas gifts, market vendors, artisans and crafters will be featured throughout the land. From ceramics to jewelry to leather goods, one is surely to find something to bring home for the modern day holiday.
Tickets for this fantastic event are $8.00 for adults, $5.00 for kids 5-18, and gratis for kids 5 and under. Parking is free. GPS users can punch in the address 3800 Janes Road, Arcata, CA 95521 into their unit, but others will find that the faire has easy access from the main highway. It’s located next to the Mad River Community Hospital about one mile west of the intersection of Hwy 101 and Janes Road.
For those looking to spend the weekend in the area, there are three hotels in Arcata. Contact the Quality Inn, North Coast Inn, or Best Western. Camping is available at the Eureka KOA but not on the grounds of the faire.
