A report card is due now that the first quarter of the 2010 MLB season has passed. Like any school year things can start out looking rosy but rapidly decline. On the other hand, a year can be headed for failure and quickly improve. Here are your 2010 Major League Baseball first quarter grades:
Tampa Bay Rays: A+. Sporting the best record in baseball.
New York Yankees: B+. Unless the Yankees are leading their division there is no way to give them an A, even if they may deserve it.
Boston Red Sox: B-. A prime example of heading towards failure but turning it around.
Toronto Blue Jays: B+. They are keeping pace in a division they have no business competing in.
Baltimore Orioles: D-. The worst record in MLB. Did you expect anything more?
Minnesota Twins: A. Year in and year out they find a way to win.
Detroit Tigers: B. They are trying to hang in there. On paper they are so much better.
Chicago White Sox: C-. They are nearly in a hole they can’t get out of.
Kansas City Royals: C. No expectations=no disappointment.
Cleveland Indians: D. It’s hard to be a sports fan in Cleveland.
Texas Rangers: A. After years in the basement it must feel good to have their heads in the clouds.
Oakland Athletics: A. They are doing A work with C talent.
Los Angeles Angels: D+. While not being out of it because of a weak division, they are not living up to expectations.
Seattle Mariners: F. They receive the only F this quarter! How hard they tried to improve in the offseason, yet are failing so miserably.
Philadelphia Phillies: A-. Leading the division but showing chinks in the armor.
Atlanta Braves: B. If they can improve on the road they’ll be dangerous.
New York Mets: C. The greater the payroll, the greater the hope.
Florida Marlins: C. Steady as she goes.
Washington Nationals: B+. Did anyone expect them to actually compete?
Cincinnati Reds: A+. Who saw this coming?
St. Louis Cardinals: A-. Respectable, but not yet dominant.
Chicago Cubs: D+. You almost start to feel sorry for them.
Pittsburg Pirates: C-. At least they aren’t in last.
Milwaukee Brewers: D. They are on the door step of complete dismantling.
Houston Astros: D-. It’s time to start over.
San Diego Padres: A+. The analyst who foresaw this should win a Pulitzer.
Los Angeles Dodgers: A-. After such a horrible beginning, the team is heading in the right direction.
San Francisco Giants: B. The grade is dropping, and dropping fast.
Colorado Rockies: B-. Injuries take their toll.
Arizona Diamondbacks: C-. To be out of the race this early will be hard to swallow.
