This fall, freshmen will be entering the halls of their chosen university. They leave the sheltered life of a high school student and will be responsible for their own success. College students that have the supplies they need are more likely to be successful. Here is a list of 10 school supply items that every college student should invest in.
A computer is a must-have item for any college student. Most college professors communicate with their students via email, give assignments using class web sites and many offer at least a few online courses. Handwritten assignments are generally unacceptable in college so students will need to type our reports and homework assignments.
Students need a high quality printer to be able to print papers, as well as research documents. A quality 3-in-1 printer will also mean that students will not waste precious study time trying to hunt down quarters to use copy machines at the library. It will definitely come in handy when you need to copy a classmates notes!
A flash drive is a necessity in college and will help a student take advantage of time between classes. They can use that time to work or study at the school’s computer lab, when they may not have time to get home to work. It will also be useful when sharing assignments with group members. As a college teaching assistant, I have seen more than one student turn in their work on a flash drive when all other forms of technology failed them.
Good note taking is crucial in college. Traditionally, college professors lecture and expect you to take in the information, via note taking. Therefore, it is important to have either a notebook for each class or a binder with a place to take notes for each class.
Highlighters and Note cards
In college, you will have to study more and more effectively than ever before. Highlighters are useful in color coding notes and highlighting important passages in textbooks. Note cards can be used to make flashcards or organizing study material.
A college students desk needs to be equipped with basic office supplies. Pens, pencils, a stapler, paper clips, and computer paper are just a few of the items that you should keep on hand. A well-stocked desk means that precious study time is not wasted looking for materials.
Be sure to purchase a high quality backpack for toting class materials around campus. Look for one that promotes organization but also good spinal health. There may be days where you tote the backpack for the majority of the day, so be sure it does not leave you with a backache.
Comfortable Walking Shoes
Most college campuses require a lot of walking between classes, the dorms, and commuter lots. A comfortable pair of shoes is critical. The last thing you want to do is be late to class because you broke a heel.
Water is critical for the brain to function and carrying a water bottle to classes is a great way to be sure that you stay hydrated. It is also economical and keeps you from pumping the vending machine full of quarters.
