Are you on a rigid diet, but need a splurge food to keep you going? If so, here are 10 low-calorie snacks that you can use during a diet splurge without breaking your calorie bank. Even so, don’t get carried away with quantity. Some of these low-calorie snack items can become high-calorie snack items if you consume them in high quantity. Avoid overeating to protect your strict diet regimen. Here are 10 low-calorie diet snack foods on which you can splurge:
Orange juice fruit drink. If you are on a liquid diet, this drink can help you get through the hard portions of your day. Just mix up some sugar-free fruit punch drink (as directed), but replace one cup of water with one cup of orange juice. The orange juice will give you a bit of an energy boost, and it gives the fruit drink a richer taste.
Peppered egg whites. Egg whites are nutritious and low in both calories and carbohydrates. Just boil several eggs, peel them, discard the yolks, and pepper the firm whites. You can eat these warm or cold. Both ways are satisfying. Do use the seasoning, though, because it helps you to feel as if you’re eating something richer than diet food.
Salted turnip. Raw turnips are good for you, but these can be really fattening. Eat only a small turnip and salt it well. The salt contrasts with the turnip’s sweetness and delivers a pleasant taste that will help you feel as if you’ve eaten a real food treat. You can even boil the turnip in a small pan of water to achieve a sweeter taste.
Baby carrots. You can easily buy an individual portion of baby carrots at most any local grocery store, and a bag isn’t expensive. Baby carrots aren’t the most original diet food, but they are sweet, healthy, and readily available, so don’t leave home without a bag. Baby carrots can help ward off hunger during any portion of your day.
Seasoned cucumber. Why not take a tip from the Hispanic culture and eat some seasoned cucumber? Slice up some fresh cucumber and sprinkle some Chili Powder over the slices and eat up. You’ll find this low-calorie snack a real delight. You may even want to mix a bit of garlic powder or garlic salt in with the Chili Powder.
Spiced melon. You can even do the same with melon, particularly watermelon. Just remove the seeds from about a cup of watermelon, mix up some garlic seasoning with some Chili Powder, sprinkle over the melon and enjoy. One word of caution: this treat is highly addicting in taste, so don’t enjoy the taste so much that you overeat.
Homemade beef jerky. If you’re on a high-protein diet, beef jerky can be the perfect diet snack for you. Even so, don’t rely on the over-priced, processed beef jerky that you buy from the store. Make your own beef jerky. The Internet offers an abundance of beef jerky recipes, so pick one out and cook you up a batch.
Peanut Butter toast. If you’re craving something crunchy and sweet, don’t mess up your diet by grabbing a quick candy bar. Just smooth a teaspoon of crunchy peanut butter across a whole-grain melba toast. If you don’t have any melba toast, pop a piece of whole-grain bread in the toaster, but cut it in half after it’s toasted. Save the other half for later.
Italian ice. If you live near an ice cream shop, try eating a kiddie cup of Italian Ice. This frozen treat is much less fattening that regular ice cream. Do purchase a kiddie cup, though, even if it is nearly the same price as the small cup because you will be prone to eat all that you purchase, regardless of the size.
Ice cream melon. If you’re dishing up bowls of ice cream for your kids, you can have some, too, but you can fill a cantaloupe half with vanilla ice cream for yourself, rather than a bowl. This way you can enjoy one scoop of ice cream with an entire cantaloupe half. This treat makes you feel that you’ve had a rich treat, while still limiting your calories.
