It’s important to keep your house in good condition, not only so it maintains a good value, but also so it doesn’t fall apart while you’re living in it. The summer time is the best time to spend a day doing some home improvement projects. Now, Before you begin any project, you need to make sure that you have done your research. Doing a job without actually knowing what you’re doing will not make the job easy, nor will the job get done correctly. You’ll end up paying more because you’ll be fixing the botched up job you did previously and fixing up the project you have originally started. Believe me, it’s not pretty. There are plenty of things you can do inside and outside of the house in order to keep your house in good condition and to become prepared for the up coming winter (as well as clean up your house from the previous one). Here is a list of 10 different projects you can do to improve your house before the fall.
1. Chimney Maintenance
It is important to keep your chimney clean, safe and working properly. You should get your chimney inspected and serviced often by a certified chimney sweep. This helps with cleaning and it also helps prevent the build up of harmful substances as well as pests and nets. You can also clean out the chimney door getting prepared for the upcoming winter by replacing any bricks, getting all repairs done and making sure that it is clean, burns well and does not get any toxic fumes into the house. It’s important to know that your chimney is in good working condition before the colder months come.

2. Deck / Porch Maintenance
During the winter time, there are a lot of things that can happen to your deck. After a few years of use, the weather not behaving and moving a lot of deck furniture all over the place and maybe scuffs up some of the finish and chip the wood – your deck / porch will need some attention. There are so many different kind of decks you can be fixing, finishing or cleaning, so before you do anything, you want to make sure you have the right materials for the right deck. Pool decks and porches are made of different materials and therefore require different care. The most basic of deck maintenance is to make sure your deck is finished correctly so that there are no injuries and the wood of your deck can stay safe and strong during the fall and the winter months. If you paint your deck, you want to make sure it’s re-painted often with the correct paint so that you do not have to paint it over and over again in the same year. If you stain it, you must be very careful with your stain and make sure you do not get it everywhere. Stain can be extremely dangerous if not applied correctly, so you will want to do your research and be extremely careful.

3. Garages & Driveway Maintenance
If you live in a city neighborhood like I do, it is important that you make sure your driveway is in good condition. It’s also important to keep your driveway in shape because weeds, and pests can live in the little cracks of your driveway and if you have a giant pothole, this can damage your car. Make sure your car is sealed correctly as well. If you have a garage it’s important to keep these in tact, especially the floor. If you have water damage or cracks in the floor, it’s just asking for problems. Cracks in the floor is breeding ground for pests because it’s indoors and a great place to hide. Flooding is also a problem because it can cause water damage which is expensive to get taken care of, but above all mold can grow very easily and cause all sorts of health problems. It’s also a good idea to organize and clean out your garage. It’s important to keep your garage organized because the pests can find places to hide and love their lives. Organization is the key to keeping things healthy, less places for dust to collect, mold to grow and pests to nest.

4. Gutters & Roofing Maintenance
Gutters are extremely important and it is extremely important that these are checked and repaired. When you have gutters that are blocked, leaky and are in desperate need of repairs, you can bet on them falling straight off the house and causing more damage than is necessary. It’s also important that you are safe when you are cleaning your gutters because falling off a ladder and spending the rest of the summer in a full body cast will not allow for all your other projects to get done this summer. Make sure your ladder is secure and if need be have someone spot you when you walk up and walk down the ladder, just to make sure it is sturdy. Cleaning out leaves and debris and just throwing them on your lawn for later clean up is the best way to do it instead of dragging up a bag or bucket to put it in. The less you have to worry about when you’re that high up, the better. Make sure you wear gloves when you do this as well because things are gross up there. If you need to repair your gutter, please please do your research. My dad is famous for not doing any research and messing up the job terribly – or in some cases he just simply makes some odd contraption that ends up falling over. Do NOT do this, please, just do it right. Your life will be easier.

I know this may not seem like a “home maintenance” type thing, but honestly? It helps with your home, it and helps to be outdoors and plant beautiful things. Starting a garden is not hard, nor is it very hard to maintain. It’s wonderful to wake up and smell some flowers in the morning and to go to sleep knowing that they are happy and weedless. This is more of a task to do while you don’t really want to do real work, but you still want to work in making your house happy.

6. Outdoor Storage
This is a perfect thing to maintain when it is raining out and you want to be outside, but you can’t. Cleaning, maintaining and making sure your outdoor storage space is in tip top shape for the coming fall and winter seasons is a great idea. Usually the things in the outdoor storage space should not get wet, they should be free of pests and they should be regularly repaired if need be. This is actually one of the best reasons to do it in the rain because it allows for you to see where there’s holes, if there’s water damage to the floor and in the meantime while it rains you can organize the shed.

7. Siding Maintenance
It’s very important to make sure your siding is not damaged or causing problems. If you do not check on these things then you could get water damage to your house, leaking, pest problems and mold growth. It’s important for your siding to be clean as well because having random green stuff growing on the side of your house is incredibly ugly not to mention horrible for your siding. It’s a good idea to make sure that your siding is working properly as well as installed properly. If you are going to be installing your own siding, make sure that you are installing it properly, in this case it may be a wise idea to hire someone to install it, it is a long, tiring and dangerous job.

8. Windows & Door Maintenance
This is yet another important thing you should check and maintenance during the summer so that during the fall and winter months your house stays warm. You should clean your screens and check for holes, make sure your windows are straight and not worn or broken. Make sure your window frames are not damaged, and if they need to be replaced, replace them! It’s important to do this because you do not want bugs to crawl into your house and nest and you do not want wind and the cold to get in.
9. Indoor Home Maintenance
It may be the time to update your insulation or to update your heating/cooling systems. During a rainy day it is the perfect time to check these things. Although you can organize any time of year, checking these things now would be better than realizing in the middle of the winter that your insulation and heating method is not working correctly. Clean things that need cleaning, if there are repairs that need to be made to your insulation, get them done. It’s easier to work in warm weather and repair things than during winter time.
10. Foundation Maintenance
Something you can do when you’re making a check list of things to get done around the house during the summer is to check if the foundation to your house is in good working condition. If there are cracks, heaving or deterioration you may want to repair it sooner than later. Also check if there are any bricks that need to be replaced or if you have concrete that has cracks or flooding you will need to get that fixed immediately. Mold, pests and other terrible things can happen. In this situation it is probably best to call a professional.
