10 Fun, Free Labor Day Weekend Activities

by itchyfish

You’ve worked hard all year, and labor day weekend is your time to relax. There are plenty of fun, free labor day weekend activities you, your family and friends will love. And just because you’re the one planning the labor day weekend, doesn’t mean everyone can’t help a little. So here are 10 fun, free labor day weekend activities that are easy to organize, easy to clean up after, and easy for everyone to enjoy.

#1. Pot Luck Labor Day Weekend Picnic

Rather than turn your backyard into your labor day weekend activity venue and end up with a lot of clean up, check out your local parks where free picnic facilities are ideal for labor day weekend picnics. You won’t have to travel far, and by reserving your table early, you can get your favorite park location. Visit a few nearby parks to have a few options in mind, then search the internet for the park contact. As for the labor day picnic food, split the list of treats between everyone for a pot luck picnic. Or split the cost up front and buy prepared salads, meats and desserts at Costco for a low-cost, no hassle labor day weekend picnic.

#2. Labor Day Weekend Kite Flying Contest

Labor day weekend can be just windy enough for a great kite flying contest. You can find cheap kites online, at Costco or Toys R Us. Or you can build your own kite from bamboo sticks and rice paper. Choose a local park that has open grassland, so kites won’t get stuck in trees. Raise the stakes for your labor day weekend activity by introducing prizes, like ice cream for the winner of the kite flying contest.

#3. Labor Day Weekend Remote Control Car Race

You don’t have to be a millionaire to race sports cars as your labor day weekend activity. Look for cheap remote control race cars online or at Wal-Mart, Target or Toys R Us. Choose a park with paved walkways and bring chalk to draw the race track start and finish lines.

#4. Labor Day Role Reversal

Once a year in England, Lords and Ladies used to switch roles with their servants. Why not do the same for a fun labor day activity? Let kids assume the roles of parents and parents start having fun like kids. Let girlfriends bring their boyfriends a dozen roses, and boyfriends bake a cake for their girlfriends. Switching roles can turn your labor day into a fun activity of walking in each others shoes.

#5. Labor Day Weekend Remote Control Boat Race

Racing remote control boats on a lake can make a wonderful labor day weekend activity. Look for cheap race boats at Radio Shack or the toy section of department stores. You can also find sales online. Choose a local park with a lake that has no seaweed or greenery in the shallows, or these will clog the race boat propellers and spoil your labor day weekend activity. Avoid the ocean or rivers where the surge can steal your boats away or the current can pose a danger to your labor day fun.

#6. Labor Day Weekend Hike

A short climb to a beautiful panorama can make for a wonderful labor day weekend activity. Search online for a local park with an easy to moderate hike, with no more than 2 miles for an uphill climb. Instead of lugging water bottles, choose a location with a river or lake, and use a pump and micro-water filter to turn natural water into drinking water. And bring energy bars for something light but filling to eat.

#7. Labor Day Campfire

Evenings on labor day weekend are cool and pleasant, and ideal for a labor day campfire. Choose a local park that permits open fires and be sure to reserve your site beforehand, or if reservations are not possible, to arrive early. Surround your campfire with rocks and clear the area around it. Bring blankets for sitting and cuddling, and hotdogs and potatoes for cheap cooking options. Wrap the food in foil paper and stick it in the embers beneath the flames.

#8. Labor Day Fair

Many cities and towns celebrate labor day with a local fair. Check your city’s website or your local newspapers or free papers handed out at supermarkets. Come early to avoid crowds and get the best deals on beautiful merchandise, or come late for bargains on last minute sales. Best of all, just stroll together with your loved one, enjoying your labor day weekend.

#9. Labor Day Weekend Beach Party

In many places, labor day weekend is still very hot, and a beach party is the ideal labor day weekend activity for a lazy day in the sun. Whether on the ocean, lake or river, the cool water will make your labor day weekend relaxing and enjoyable no matter how hot it gets. Search the internet for nearby parks with water and see if you can reserve a site for your labor day weekend party. If not, be sure to arrive very early to catch a good site before all are taken. Bring a grill and use these best barbecue recipes to cook up a dream labor day picnic.

#10. Labor Day Weekend Getaway

Make your labor day weekend extra special by getting away for the whole weekend. Pack a tent and sleeping bags, with an inflatable mattress for comfort, and choose a distant park to laze in the sun for a few days. Leave your laptop behind, and turn your cell phone off. Bring board games and a CD or cassette player, and listen to audio stories from old time radio. For stargazing at night, print a star chart from the internet and take turns finding stars.
