New Funny Family-Friendly Upcoming Movies of July 2010
Ramona and Beezus – Everyone’s favorite klutzy girl from Klickitat Street finally gets her own movie, which definitely looks like it could be one of the top new family movies of the summer of 2010. Joey King stars as the imaginative girl dealing with all of life’s little problems (including big sis Beezus, played by Selena Gomez) in her own creative way. So be sure to brush up on your Beverly Clearly with your children and enjoy seeing Ramona’s imagination brought to life on the big screen on July 23, 2010.
Despicable Me – This is one of the new upcoming animated movies of 2010 where the bad guy is the star, as evil mastermind Gru hides out in a secret lair underneath his suburban home and plots to steal the moon. However, three little orphan girls are determined to turn him from being super bad into a super dad. But with his capability to steal landmarks like the Great Pyramid of Giza (which he replaces with a giant inflatable), he’s going to be one formidable foe for his would-be family. Fortunately for them, he could be a bit vulnerable while contending with Vector, a supervillain that’s always one step ahead of Gru. So will he and his Tic-Tac-like minions succeed in stealing the moon, or will three little orphan girls melt this mad criminal mastermind’s heart? Check out one of the best new upcoming animated movies of the summer of 2010 to see if they save the day from his collection of freeze and shrink rays on July 9, 2010.
Standing Ovation – This is one of the new movies of July 2010 that is just going to be in limited release, so Gleeks better pray it comes to a theater near them. The tween comedy focuses on a group of junior high friends that form a singing group called The Five Ovations to compete in a music video contest. They don’t have much money, but they’ve got plenty of talent and creativity to help them beat their rich and spoiled rivals, The Wiggies. It’s one of the upcoming summer movies of 2010 that’s definitely not for everyone, but Gleeks and HSM fans will probably appreciate the song and dance numbers on July 16, 2010.
New Family-Friendly Upcoming Action Movies of July 2010
The Last Airbender – This is one of the best new upcoming movies of July 2010 for families that are fans of past fantasy films like those in the Harry Potter and Chronicles of Narnia franchises. The movie is director M. Night Shyamalan’s first foray into making a kid-friendly film, so hopefully we won’t be treated to a “what a twist!” ending. In a world divided into four nations based on natural elements, the powerful Fire Nation is waging war against the Earth, Wind, and Water Nations. However, there is one Avatar (the word has nothing to do with blue aliens here) with the power to control all the elements that may hold the key to stopping the fire nation. Sure the whole being able to control the elements thing may remind us of our favorite blue guy capable of doing just that (Captain Planet), but the movie is actually based on an animated series entitled ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’. So if your kids are a part of the built-in fanbase, this is one of the upcoming new movies of the summer that they’ll likely not let you miss, so be sure to check it out on July 2, 2010.
The Sorcerer’s Apprentice – Here is one of the new upcoming family-friendly summer movies of July 2010 for those who can’t get enough of the magic of the wizarding world. Like the Harry Potter movies, ‘The Sorcerer’s Apprentice’ focuses on a guy learning the art of witchcraft, however, Jay Baruchel’s character only has one teacher (Nicholas Cage), and he’s a bit reluctant to become involved in a wizarding war. So can the two team up to save New York from a dark wizard? If he’s anything like he-who-must-not-be-named, their wands (or walking broomsticks?) will have their work cut out for them on July 16, 2010. (All Harry Potter and ‘Fantasia’ jokes aside, the special effects do look pretty amazing.)
New Sci-Fi and Action Upcoming Movies of July 2010
Predators – This is, surprisingly, one of the few new upcoming movies of July 2010 that is a reboot/sequel. Adrien Brody and the adorable Alice Braga are unlikely action heroes, as they star as part of a group of mercenaries dropped onto an Earth-like planet as prey for the predator aliens. It will be interesting to see this new alien world, which, judging by a still from the movie, will include an Avatar-like beast to further terrorize the human weaklings thrown onto its planet as playthings. It may not be original, but it still looks like a real heart-pounder. Plus sci-f fans will enjoy comparing it to the previous Predator movies when it hits theaters on July 7, 2010.
Inception – This is definitely one of the most anticipated new upcoming movies of July 2010, as Christopher Nolan’s latest looks to blow your mind by infiltrating minds. Leonardo DiCaprio stars as a new kind of criminal, a guy that uses a special device to enter dreams and steal valuable ideas. Of course this makes for an extremely surreal setting, complete with shifting landscapes and altered versions of reality. Leonardo DiCaprio’s character is an expert at navigating such landscapes to steal ideas, but when he’s faced with the reverse challenge, to plant an idea, will he succeed and save himself from living the rest of his life as a fugitive? Ken Watanabe, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cotillard, Ellen Page, and Michael Caine round out an incredible cast, and, if nothing else, one of the most fantastic of the new upcoming movies of the summer should boast plenty of amazing visuals when it hits theaters on July 16, 2010.
New Adult Comedy Upcoming Movies of July 2010
Dinner for Schmucks – The director of ‘Meet the Parents’ and the Austin Powers movies brings us this remake of a funny French film, ‘Le Diner de Cons’. Here Paul Rudd stars as a guy who inadvertently meets the perfect date for his company’s “dinner for idiots”, a quirky character named Barry with a love of constructing dioramas of stuffed mice (“mouse-terpeices”). He’s got good intentions, but is definitely a walking disaster, the sure-fire way to impress Paul Rudd’s bosses at their dinner. But will Barry’s behavior backfire? Zach Galifianakis also stars as a guy Barry is convinced has the power of mind control in what could be one of the funniest upcoming movies of the summer, so be sure that you and your favorite idiot(s) don’t miss enjoying dinner and a movie on July 30, 2010.
The Kids Are All Right – This is one of the new upcoming movies of July 2010 that is, unfortunately, only in limited release, but it might be worth watching if you’re lucky enough to be near a theater that plays it. The movie stars Julianne Moore and Annette Bening as a lesbian couple with two adopted children (Mia Wasikowska and Josh Hutcherson) that decide to bring their motorcycle-riding slacker of a sperm donor (Mark Ruffalo) into their lives. Of course hilarity ensues as the close-knit family becomes slightly unraveled. Is it a gay-friendly film? It’s hard to tell from the trailer, but the R-rating definitely makes it an adult-friendly one if you get the chance to check it out on July 9, 2010.
New Upcoming Drama Movies of July 2010
Get Low – This is yet another of the new movies on this list that’s only in limited release, but, with so few upcoming dramas during the summer, it may be your best bet for something a little different. It’s based on the real-life legend of a 1930’s hermit from Tennessee who threw his own funeral party while he was still alive, with Robert Duvall playing the emotional role of the man with a plan to party before his body parts with its soul. Sissy Spacek and Bill Murray also star in this film that’s part folktale and part real-life fantasy brought to life, a movie that looks to be poetic, thought-provoking, and perhaps full of secrets. Check out Robert Duvall give it his all on July 30, 2010 if you get the chance.
So from family-friendly comedies and action movies to those aimed at adults, the upcoming summer movies of July 2010 are a smorgasbord of new tempting summertime treats sure to please the palates of many moviegoers.
